Quilts & Art Quilts

Quilt making is an essential part of my textile practice.

It is where design ideas are tested through material, structure, and use. Alongside functional quilts, art quilts provide a space for exploration within textile work.

Quilt Making as Design

Quilts are not only finished objects, but a way to examine design decisions in practice.

Working through cutting, piecing, and stitching reveals how fabric patterns move from surface to structure. This process brings questions of scale, repetition, balance, and material interaction into real use.

Insights gained through quilt making inform both fabric design and teaching.

Functional Quilts

Functional quilts are created with use in mind.

Comfort, durability, and construction provide clear frameworks within which design decisions are tested. These works explore how fabric design supports structure and how visual ideas translate into objects meant to be lived with, not only viewed.

Art Quilts

Art quilts offer a more open field for investigation.

They allow structure, surface, and material relationships to be examined with fewer functional constraints. Rather than aiming for expression alone, these works remain grounded in material understanding, construction, and process.

Relationship to Design and Learning

Quilt making, fabric collections, and learning materials are connected parts of the same practice.

Working with quilts strengthens design thinking by testing ideas in scale and use, while also supporting pattern development and teaching through direct material experience.
